John vet of the year

After 50 years of tireless commitment to treating the injuries and illnesses of pets and other animals, local veterinarian, John Ward, was recognised recently as the 2018 Petplan Vet of the Year.

The awards first began in 2016 and recognise and support the hard work of all veterinary professionals.

People from all over the country nominated their veterinary heroes, but it was John who received the most support from a panel of expert judges and a public vote.

“In 1982 my wife and I moved to East Gippsland and established Lakes Entrance and Metung veterinary clinics,” John said.

“We were initially a mobile service until I was able to construct a suitable clinic to operate from. Since then, the practice has grown exponentially.

“I’m the sole vet in the practice, available 24 hours a day, and treat both large and small animals.

“What I love about my role is the variety. I could be vaccinating a dog one minute, examining a snake the next, stop off to treat a horse with colic, then finish the day by pulling a calf. I never know what to expect when the phone rings.”
