Ice cream and a pie

You can now buy an ice cream at the Metung Bakery, not just the bread and a pie.

The bakery now has nine different flavoured ice creams to choose from as the warm weather kicks in.

Judging by the line-up at the bakery over the weekend, the ice creams, which come in coffee fudge, mint choc-chip, rum and raisin, vanilla, watermelon, chocolate, honey crunch and strawberry, are proving to be a real hit.

Bakery owner, Lam Nguyen, said a real plus is the ice creams are locally made in Lakes Entrance by Riviera Ice Cream Company.

“People kept asking us to supply ice creams so we thought we’d give it a try,” Mr Nguyen said.

Perhaps not surprisingly chocolate is proving the most popular choice, especially with children.

It’ s almost one year since the popular Metung Bakery was gutted in a fire, which swept through the Metung Village destroying a number of businesses.

For Mr Nguyen and his extended family the fire was a heartbreaking end to his dream of owning a bakery in the popular holiday playground.

Fortunately, with the support of the local community, the Nguyens were able to move into premises across the road and haven’t looked back.

“It’s great here, the shop is a lot bigger and we have been able to offer a wider variety of food,” Mr Nguyen said.

He said customer feedback had been encouraging and the bakery is now also planning to do curry nights after trialling them at lunch time.
